(SKU: LSB100B2B0) King Kashyap, who ruled from 477 AD through 495 AD, made Sigiriya his royal capital during his monarchy. The harem of the monarch consisted of more than 500 concubines, each of whom was renowned for sensual and exotic beauty that they had. It is for this reason that a majority of people think that the ladies depicted in the "Sigiri Frescoes," who had golden skin and were bare-breasted, were modelled after them. It is possible that the women depicted in these paintings were members of the royal family, specifically Kashyapa's daughters, due to the exquisite and expensive gem-studded jewellery that they wear. A second school of thought holds that the paintings depict apsaras, which are heavenly deities, descending from the skies to bestow their blessings upon the citadel.
